This chapter describes the pyrolysis of alcohols, enols, phenols, di- and poly-hydroxybenzenes, and of alcohols and phenols with additional functional groups. Among the discussed alcohols are the short-chain monohydroxy primary alcohols (methanol, ethanol, etc.), monohydroxy secondary and tertiary alcohols, sterols, diols, and polyols. A detailed discussion on glycerin pyrolysis is presented. A short section on metal alcoxides is also included. The phenols discussed here are several monohydroxybenzenes and naphthols. The pyrolysis of catechol, hydroquinone, other polyhydroxybenzenes, and metallic derivatives of phenols is also presented. The chapter also includes a discussion on pyrolysis of phenols with alcohol groups, of alcohols with halogen groups, and of phenols with halogen groups. Similar to other chapters, for each discussed compound, detailed pyrograms and lists of decomposition compounds generated by heat are indicated.
