Treatment of europium(III) acetylacetonate [Eu(acac)3 · nH2O] with dilithium phthalocyaninate (Li2Pc) afforded Eu(acac)(Pc), which induced cyclic tetramerisation of 4,5-disubstituted phthalonitriles C6H2R2(CN)2 (R = n-C7H15, OC5H11) producing the unsymmetrical bis(phthalocyaninato)europium(III) complexes Eu(Pc)[Pc∗(Rx)] (Pc∗ = 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octasubstituted phthalocyaninate) of which the spectroscopic and electrochemical properties were studied.
