The dehydration of cis- and trans-2-methylcyclopentanol on BPO catalysts with PB from 0.6 to 1.4, yields only 1-methylcyclopentene and 3-methylcyclopentene, with the relative amounts depending on the catalyst composition and the alcohol conformation. This data and that obtained from water-added catalysts and HMDS poisoning are interpreted to suggest a mixed mechanism involving a dominant E2 antielimination and an E1 2-methylcyclopentyl cation process.
