A series of bis-thiazolium diesters has been prepared. All were substantially less potent than atracurium and all showed appreciable vagal blockade at neuromuscular blocking doses. N-Benzyl quaternary substituents shortened the duration of neuromuscular blockade significantly. Neuromuscular blocking potency was greater and duration of action least in bis-N-3,4,5-trimethoxybenzylthiazolium salts, though each of these effects was at its optimum at differing interquaternary chain separations.
