The present work reports the catalytic activity of Cu3(BTC)2 (BTC: 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) in C–N coupling of benzimidazole with phenylboronic acid to afford N-arylbenzimidazole in high yield under mild reaction conditions. A series of optimization results indicate that Et3N is an optimal base to promote this reaction. This protocol is applied to synthesize a series of N-arylated azoles in moderate to high yields under the present experimental conditions. Furthermore, the catalyst stability is checked by powder XRD, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and FT-IR. These data indicate that there is a change in the crystalline nature of Cu3(BTC)2 after the reaction, but however, reusability studies reveal that the catalyst can be recycled four cycles without any decay in its activity.
