Aromatic sulfonation—XLII

The partial rate factors for the sulfonation of neopentylbenzene in 89·9% H2SO4 at 25·0° were determined to be fp = 82 ± 12, fm = 5·7 ± 1·4 and fo = 1·2 ± 0·6. The low fo/fp ratio is ascribed to steric hindrance for ortho-substitution. Evidence for the non-bonded interaction of a neopentyl and sulfo substituent in ortho-position was also obtained from a dynamic NMR study of 1,3,5-trineopentyl-2-benzenesulfonyl chloride.
