The collection by air entrainment, of volatiles associated with Ulmus procera, and with U. procera infested with unmated male and female Scolytus scolytus is described. All three extracts of volatiles were active against male and female beetles in a walking arrestant-excitant bioassay, but only the volatiles from male-infested elm showed high activity against both sexes. The mixed (threo + erythro) isomers of 4-methyl-3-heptanol were associated with male-infested elm. α-Multistriatin and trace amounts of erythro 4-methyl-3-heptanol were among the volatiles from female-infested elm. Both sexes responded maximally to the mixed isomers of 4-methyl-3-heptanol, but while males responded more strongly to the threo isomer females responded more strongly to the erythro isomer. α-Multistriatin was weakly active against both sexes.
