The decomposition of condensed phase fluorine azide (cas 14986-60-8)

The burn rate of 5–80-μm-thick cryogenic films of fluorine azide was determined by schlierern photography to be 1.6 ± 0.2 mm/μs. This rate was found to be strongly influenced by the presence of N2F2, but less so by the presence of CO2. By analogy with the results from the gas-phase decomposition of fluorine azide, the nascent decomposition products were expected to be NF(a) and N2. A thermal combustion mechanism driven by the energy released upon production and quenching of the NF(a) species was, therefore, proposed.
