Caesium hexachlororhodate(IV): An authentic compound of rhodium(IV)

The green solid Cs2[RhCl6], generated in aqueous media using acidic ammonium hexanitrocerate(IV), (NH4)2[CeIV(NO3)6], is as formulated. It has the d5 configuration for rhodium. Evidence for the RhIV ions in the freshly prepared solid—and for RhIII ions in the solid and aqueous solution after decomposition—is given using X-ray powder photographs, vibrational spectra (IR and Raman), ESR, magnetic susceptibility and elemental analysis. The definitive properties of Cs2[RhCl6] are compared with those for various chlororhodium(III) compounds. Previous data concerning it, often apparently conflicting, are rationalized.
