The anomalously abundant loss of OCH3 from molecular ions of 2-methoxycinnamic acid is shown to be due to a lowered strength of the ArOCH3+· bond. This is a direct consequence of the raised ionization energy originating from the electronic interaction of the side chain and the substituent.
