The silanol moieties on the surface covered by I act synergetically in enhancing the arom. character of the mol.: several silanols withdraw the electron cloud of I simultaneously from various points of the adsorbed mol., and, as the surface becomes more acidic, I becomes capable of donating its electrons to a greater degree and coloration is enhanced. Photodimerization of I decreased in the order: untreated silica > dried silica > fluorinated silica. .
