DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) The effects of the hydroxyl free radical, the superoxide free radical, and the trichloromethyl peroxy free radical on the survival of bacteriophage T2 were studied in the absence and presence of several nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). The trichloromethylperoxy radical-derived from CCl4 is considerably more effective than the hydroxyl radical in inactivating the virus; the superoxide radical has only a minor inactivating effect. All of the NSAID investigated (flurbiprofen [5104-49-4], ibuprofen [15687-27-1], sulindac [38194-50-2], piroxicam [36322-90-4], benoxaprofen [51234-28-7], mefenamic acid [61-68-7], diflunisal [22494-42-4], aspirin [50-78-2], D-penicillamine [52-67-5], indomethacin [53-86-1], and metiazinic acid [13993-65-2]) inhibit inactivation by the hydroxyl free radical. This is an agreement with the high rate consts. of reaction with this radical detd. using the fast-reaction technique of pulse radiolysis, i.e. (k >109M-1s-1). 11062-77-4 and 13993-65-2 which are cas registry numbers of chemicals are mentioned. The S-contg. drugs, metiazinic acid, piroxicam, penicillamine, and sulindac, as well as the indole deriv. indomethacin, protect the virus from inactivation by the trichloromethyl peroxy radical (the dose modifying factor, DMF >20). In contrast, acetylsalicylic acid-related drugs, such as diflunisal, the anthranilic acid deriv., mefenamic acid, and some phenylpropionic acid derivs., such as flurbiprofen, exhibit only a very small or no protective effect (DMF <2). As with hydroxyl radical, the ability of the drugs to protect the virus from inactivation by the peroxy radical is in agreement with their corresponding rate consts. of reaction detd. by pulse radiolysis. .
