DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) Discharges fed with C3F8 [76-19-7]-H2 mixts. were studied by mass spectrometry in a tubular reactor operated at 0.5 torr and 50 W. Comparison of the results with those obtained with emission actinometry give addnl. evidence that emission actinometry and mass spectrometry are powerful diagnostic tools to monitor stable and unstable species in discharges utilized for dry etching and polymer depositions. Mechanisms for end product formation and polymer deposition are also discussed.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 57 (Ceramics) Perfluoropropane [76-19-7] was used to prep. Na borosilicate glasses with reduced water contents. These glasses were drawn into fibers having reduced losses, particularly at longer wavelengths. The technique enabled the prepn. of the lowest loss optical fiber made from borosilicate glass, with loss 2.9 decibel/km at 1.1 m. Improvements in the technique and adjustments in the glass redox in prepn. could result in further decrease in optical loss.
