- Method for the determination of the marker and dye in heavy fuel oils
- Method for the determination of the marker and dye in heavy fuel oils. May, Elsie M.; Hunt, David C.; Holcombe, David G. (Lab. Gov. Chem., London SE1 8XY, UK). Analyst (London), 111(8), 993-5 (English) 1986. CODEN: ANALAO. ISSN: 0003-2654. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 51 (Fossil Fuels, Derivatives, and Related Products) Section cross-reference(s): 80 A method is described for the detn. of residual quinizarin [81-64-1] and Solvent Red 24 [85-83-6] (marker and dye) in gas oil which has been treated to remove them for illicit use of the oil as road fuel. The marker and dye are concd. by retention on a silica cartridge which is washed with hexane to remove the hydrocarbons and then sepd. from hexane-insol. fractions of the gas oil by column chromatog. on silica. Finally, the eluate from the column is injected onto a reversed-phase high-performance liq. chromatog. column of ODS Hypersil. The detection limits were 0.2 and 0.4 mg/L for the marker and dye, resp., in the final soln. (0.02 and 0.04 g/1000 L of gas oil, resp.).
- Identification of hydrocarbon markers in oil-polluted waters by use of column and thin-layer chromatography
- Identification of hydrocarbon markers in oil-polluted waters by use of column and thin-layer chromatography. Whittle, P. J. (Rivers Div. Lab., North West Water Auth., Warrington, Engl.). Analyst (London), 102(1221), 976-8 (English) 1977. CODEN: ANALAO. ISSN: 0003-2654. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 61 (Water) Section cross-reference(s): 51 Gas oil-contaminated water (1 L) was acidified to pH 2 with concd. HCl, shaken 1 h with 25 mL light petroleum on elec. driven rollers, and the upper layer was removed, dried over anhyd. Na2SO4, and passed down a short column of Florisil preequilibrated with light petroleum, the bulk eluates being retained for identification of the oil. Quinizarin [81-64-1] and C.I. Solvent Red 24 [85-83-6] hydrocarbon markers were retained on the column. C.I. Solvent Red 24 was eluted with Me2CO and quinizarin was eluted with 4 vol. % HCO2H in Me2CO. Both eluates were evapd. to dryness, dissolved in 8-12 mL Me2CO, and developed by thin-layer chromatog. on silica gel-impregnated glass fiber with hexane-toluene-AcOH (3:3:0.2). C.I. Solvent Red 24 appeared as a pink spot, Rf 0.4, and quinizarin gave a yellow fluorescent spot under UV light, Rf 0.6. The detection limits are 12 and 30 ng for quinizarin and C.I. Solvent Red 24, resp., and the recoveries are ~50%.
