cyclitols

Cyclitols, also known as cycloalkanols or cyclohexanehexols, are a group of cyclic polyols characterized by a six-membered ring structure with multiple hydroxyl (-OH) groups attached. The most common cyclitol is inositol, which has several stereoisomers such as myo-inositol, scyllo-inositol, and D-chiro-inositol. Cyclitols are widely distributed in nature and serve essential roles in biological systems, particularly as precursors or components of important signaling molecules and secondary metabolites. Inositol, for example, plays critical roles in cell signaling, membrane structure, and the regulation of various physiological processes such as insulin signaling and neurotransmitter activity. Cyclitols are also utilized in pharmacology and nutrition due to their ability to influence cellular functions and metabolic pathways.
