    IMPORTANT WARNING:   Return to top

Oral hypoglycemic drugs, including tolazamide, have been associated with increased cardiovascular mortality. Talk to your doctor about the possible risks, benefits, and alternatives of using this drug for your condition.

Why is this medication prescribed®   Return to top

Tolazamide is used to treat type 2 diabetes (condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood), particularly in people whose diabetes cannot be controlled by diet alone. Tolazamide lowers blood sugar by stimulating the pancreas to secrete insulin and helping the body use insulin efficiently. The pancreas must produce insulin for this medication to work. Tolazamide is not used to treat type 1 diabetes (condition in which the body does not produce insulin and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood).

This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

How should this medicine be used®   Return to top

Tolazamide comes in tablets to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day with breakfast. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take tolazamide exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Continue to take tolazamide even if you feel well. Do not stop taking tolazamide without talking to your doctor.

What special precautions should I follow®   Return to top

    Before taking tolazamide,

    • tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to tolazamide or any other drugs.

    • tell your doctor if you have or have ever had liver, kidney, thyroid, adrenal, heart, or pituitary disease.
    • tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking tolazamide, call your doctor.
    • if you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking tolazamide.
    • plan to avoid unnecessary or prolonged exposure to sunlight and to wear protective clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Tolazamide may make your skin sensitive to sunlight.

What special dietary instructions should I follow®   Return to top

Alcohol may cause a decrease in blood sugar. Ask your doctor about the safe use of alcoholic beverages while you are taking tolazamide.

What should I do if I forget a dose®   Return to top

Before you start to take tolazamide, ask your doctor what you should do if you forget to take a dose. Write down these directions so you can refer to them later.

As a general rule, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
