Total synthesis of progesterone receptor ligands, (-)-PF1092A, B and C

Microbial metabolites (-)-PF1092A, B and C belonging to an eremophilane sesquiterpene group are synthesized from (R)-5-hydroxymethyl-2(5H)-furanone through the SnCl₄ promoted cyclization of an α-keto methyl sulfone and dimethyl acetal followed by a Stork annulation which gives the octalone core.
