Michael additions of mercaptanes and amines to optically pure 6-alkyl-5,6-dihydro-2H-pyran-2-ones of the mevinolin type <6(R)>-5 and the aromatic analog <6(S)>-7 are stereospecific to give 4(R)-substituted mevinolin analogs.
