The chiral key intermediate of 1β-methylcarbapenem antibiotic is synthesized via (2R,3R,4S,5R)-3-amino-2,5-dimethyl-5-pentanolide-4-carboxylic acid, which is prepared in a stereoselective manner from (R)-(-)-hydroxy-butyrate.
