A homologous series of 4-cyanophenyl 4-(2,4-dialkoxybenzoyloxy)benzoates (from the pentyloxy to decyloxy homologs) shows a monotropic nematic phase, and the lower members show a large positive dielectric anisotropy in the mesophase.
