1-Aroyl-2-azidomethylbenzimidazoles 2 react with tertiary phosphines to give the corresponding 1-aroyl-4H-imidazo<1,5-a>benzimidazoles 4.On the other hand, iminophosphorane 5 derived from 2-azidomethylbenzimidazole and triphenylphosphine, reacts with aromatic isocyanates to give 1-arylimino-2-arylcarbamoyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-imidazo<1,5-a>benzimidazoles 9.The molecular structure of 9 has been established by means of 2D-NMR analysis and X-ray crystallography.
