Some 4,5-dioxo-4,5-dihydro-3H-benzindoles have been alkylated.The N-alkyl derivatives were used in the synthesis of 8-oxoindenol<2,1-b>pyrroles and 2-aminomethyl-3-methyl (and benzyl)-4,5-dioxo-4,5-dihydrobenzindole.
