The scope and mechanism of a remarkably facile interconversation between 4,6-dialkoxy-3-alkyl-2-pyrones and their corresponding 5-alkyl isomers is described.The preponderance of the latter over the former is rationalized by the stereoelectronic conformational preference of the C4-alkoxy group.
