4-Thioxo mesoionic dithioles substituted at the position five by a R1 lipophilic group or by a R1 hydrophilic group, are obtained from gem dicyano epoxides. Their alcoylation with an hydrophilic (or potentialy hydrophilic) R2X derivative, or with a lipophilic R2X derivative, followed by a reduction, gives rise to amphiphilic dithioles which are the precursors of the amphiphilic tetrathiafulvalenes.
