α-Aminonitriles, 4-nitrobenzonitrile and 3,5-dinitrobenzonitrile were hydrolyzed exclusively to amides efficiently when they were stirred with 2-mercaptoethanol in a phosphate buffer (pH 7.0, 50 mM).
