Copper(II) promoted cyclizations of a,c-biladiene salts bearing large terminal (1′,8′) substituents afford intermediates which suffer a variety of cleavage and cyclization reactions, in a stepwise manner, to yield mono-mesosubstituted porphyrins, chlorins, and di-meso-substituted porphyrins via facile migration reactions.
