tube placed in a cold well. Separately, 0.75 equiv of [Ru(bpy)3](PF6)3
was dissolved in 1 mL of dichloromethane/toluene. The [Ru(bpy)3]-
(PF6)3 solution was then layered onto the frozen solution of iridium
complex and chilled. EPR samples were then removed from the
glovebox while cold and immediately stored in a liquid nitrogen bath.
Just prior to recording the spectra, the samples were briefly warmed
above the freezing point of the solvent mixture, rapidly mixed, and
refrozen, and spectra were recorded. Samples containing CpIr(biph)-
(p-CNCH2SO2C6H4CH3) (4) were then allowed to stand at room
temperature for 20 min prior to refreezing to examine the thermal
stability of the observed iridium(IV) species.
