Starting with the methyl nicotinate 2 the nicotinamide 4, the 5-hydroxymethyl compound 5 and - in five steps - the 5,6-bis(hydroxymethyl)pyridine 10 are prepared. The N-oxide 3 reacts with nitric acid to yield the nitro aromate 11.
