A <2>catenane comprised of a macrocyclic polyether, analogous to bisparaphenylene 34-crown-10 - but incorporating catechol units in its tetraethyleneglycol chains - and the cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) tetracation, has been self-assembled and shown to exist in solution as a non-equimolar mixture of translational isomers.
