Treatment of XCF₂COOEt (X = Cl and Br) with SmI₂ in THF gave efficiently β,β-difluorinated enolate equivalent, which was used for Reformatsky type reaction with aldehydes and ketones to give 2,2-difluoro-3-hydroxy ester.
