Synthesis and properties of the alkynyl-bridged heterobimetallics [Mo(C≡CFc)(Ph2PCH2CH2PPh2)(η-C7H7)]z (Fc = ferrocenyl, z = 0 or + 1)

Cyclic voltammetric investigations reveal that [Mo(C≡CFc)(dppe)(η-C₇H₇)] (dppe = Ph₂PCH₂CH₂PPh₂) 1a, undergoes two reversible one-electron oxidations; chemical oxidation with [FeCp ₂][PF₆] results in the formation of [Mo(C≡CFc)(dppe)(η-C₇H₇)][PF₆] 1b, accompanied by a negative shift in the infrared active v(C≡C) of 50cm^-1. The solution esr spectrum of 1b, with resolved hyperfine coupling to dppe phosphorus atoms and C₇H₇ ring hydrogens, suggests that the odd electron in Ib is resident principally at the cycloheptatrienylmolybdenum centre.
