A glyoxalase I inhibitor and (-)-KD16-U1 have been synthesized from D-ribonic acid γ-lactone through SnCl₄-promoted cyclization of a phenylsulfonyl enol silyl ether and regioselective introduction of a hydroxymethyl group.
