1321 instrument. The H and 13C NMR spectra were
recorded on a Bruker AM-300 instrument from
solutions in DMSO-d6 using tetramethylsilane as
internal reference. The Electronic absorption spectra
were measured on a Varian Cary 50 spectrophotometer.
The reaction mixtures were analyzed, and the purity of
products was checked, by TLC on Silufol UV-254
plates.

Reactions of tetrachlorophthalonitrile (I) with
amines (general procedure). A mixture of 1.33 g of
tetrachlorophthalonitrile (I), 1.75 or 3.5 g of potassium
carbonate, and the corresponding amine (0.01 or 0.02
mol in the presence of potassium carbonate or 0.05
mol in the absence of it) in 30 ml of DMF was stirred
for 5 h at 50°C or 80°C (in the absence of K2CO3). The
mixture was cooled, poured into a saturated solution of
sodium chloride, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The
extract was washed with three portions of water and
dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, the solvent was
distilled off, and the residue was subjected to column
chromatography on silica gel using toluene as eluent.
Analytical samples were obtained by additional
recrystallization from ethanol.

General procedure for the synthesis of amino-
substituted phthalocyanines. A round-bottom flask
equipped with a reflux condenser was charged with a
thoroughly ground mixture of 0.50 mmol of the
corresponding substituted phthalonitrile, 0.13 mmol of
cobalt(II) chloride or zinc(II) acetate, 0.50 mmol of
DBU, and 5 ml of pentan-1-ol. The mixture was heated
to the boiling point (~138°C), kept for 2 h at that
temperature, cooled to room temperature, and treated
with ethanol. The green precipitate was filtered off and
washed on a filter with several portions of hot ethanol
and distilled water. The product was dissolved in
pyridine, and the solution was subjected to
chromatography on silica gel using pyridine as eluent.
A fraction containing the target complex was
concentrated under reduced pressure, the complex was
precipitated with a mixture of ethanol and acetic acid
(1:1), and the precipitate was washed on a filter with
hot ethanol and dried. The yields of phthalocyanines
X–XIV were about 40%.
