Condensation of isovaleric aldehyde with cyanothioacetamide and acetylacetone or its enamine produces 5-acetyl-3-cyano-4-isobutyl-6-methyl-3,4-dihydropyridine-2(1H)-thione, from which 5-acetyl-3-cyano-4-isobutyl-6-methylpyridine-2(1H)-thione and the corresponding substituted 2-alkylthio-1,4-dihydropyridines are prepared. 1999 KluwerAcademic/Plenum Publishers.
