Bromoglycinate 4 was coupled with the (trimethylsilyl)ketene acetal of dibenzyl malonate to furnish predominantly the syn-lactone 6.Hydrogenolysis of 6 directly afforded β carboxyaspartic acid (Asa) in 30percent overall yield in >98percent ee.The optical purity of the synthetic Asa was determined by decarboxylation and esterification to aspartic acid diethyl eester.
