Hexahydrotriazines, III: Mannich Reagents from 1,3,5-Trialkylhexahydro-1,3,5-triazines

Contrary to the literature 1,3,5-trialkylhexahydro-1,3,5-triazines on alkylation or protonation do not yield 3 moles of Mannich reagents.The reaction with hydrogen chloride leads by way of aminal cleavage to a mixture of monochloromethylamine and bis(chloromethyl)amine which was proved by trapping these compounds with phenols.
