A synthesis of lactone 4, which corresponds to the bicyclicx nucleus of verrucarol (1), is described.The key step of this synthesis are the BF3*Et2O catalyzed Diels-Alder reaction of 7 with methyl acrylate and the oxidative conversion of cycloadduct 8 into epoxy alcohols 10a and 10b.A trimethylsilyl group plays a crucial role in both of these transformations.
