<(C5Me5)Ir(Me)2(Me2SO)> reacts with arenes (C6H5X) to give methane and a mixture of m- and p-substituted <(C5Me5)Ir(Me)(C6H4X)(Me2SO)>; the order of reactivity is X = I > NO2 > CF3 > Br > H > OMe > Cl > F > Me; iridium(V) species are proposed as intermediates.
