The reaction of nardofuran (1) with alkaline hydrogen peroxide did not provide the expected epoxyketone 2, but the epoxylactone 3.Under the conditions applied this is a rare Baeyer- Villiger oxidation product.By lowering the temperature from +15 deg C to -15 deg C and by altering the molar ratio of the reactants, epoxynardofuran 2 was obtained, which is an intermediate in the formation of 3.
