All of the reagents and solvents are purchased from commercial
sources and used without any purification unless anhydrous
conditions were noted. in situ EPR spectra were recorded on a
microwave frequency of 9.05 GHz by the JEOL electron spin
spectrometer equipped with X-band microwave unit. in-situ UV–vis
spectra were recorded on an AvaSpec-2048 spectrometer (Avantes,
Netherlands).
General procedure for the aerobic oxidation of toluene and its
derivatives
First, substrate (10.0 mmol), acetylacetone (10.0 mmol), catalyst
and acetonitrile (10 mL) were charged into the autoclave at room
temperature. Then, the autoclabe was sealed and flushed with
dioxygen for several times to keep the pressure of reactor at 1.0

A biomimetic aerobic selective oxidation of toluene and its
derivatives catalyzed by cobalt porphyrin with acetylacetone as
inititor was developed. The effects of reaction temperature,
pressure, and catalyst and acetylacetone amounts on the aerobic 16 D. C. Mielczarek, M. Matrat, A. Ben Amara, Y. Bouyou, P.
oxidation of toluene were optimized. Under the optimized
conditions, the conversion of toluene was 14.6%. From the results
obtained from experiments as well as in situ EPR and UV–vis
spectroscopy, the mechanism of this biomimetic catalytic system for
the oxidation of toluene was proposed. Acetylacetone served as the 19 X. L. Wang, G. D. Wu, F. Wang, H. Liu, T. F. Jin, Catal. Commun.
key inititor of free radical for activating dioxygen.
