Finally, the catalyst deactivation was considered, and
the catalyst was found to be stable over three cycles
without appreciable loss in activity.
4 Conclusions
In the present study a mild, efficient and environmentally
benign protocol for the preparation of cyclic acetals using a
heterogeneous catalyst has been presented. Although there
are few reports on acetalation using clays, alumina pillared
saponite shows better yields than the reported catalysts.
Cyclohexanone reacts smoothly with pentaerithritol at
refluxing temperature with pillared clay catalysts. Bulkier
ketones, as benzophenone and acetophenone, gave lower
yields due to the presence of bulkier intermediates. The
steric effect in acetalation reaction is supported by the
absence of reaction in the case of veratraldehyde.
