Reaction of excess of the organo-ytterbium ?-complex PhYbI with chalcone gives trans-stilbene (1), the C-C bond cleavage product and 1,1,3-triphenylpropene (2) together with diphenylmethanol (3); a possible mechanism of the reaction is proposed.
