A convenient synthesis of alkyl heteroarylpyruvates

Several ethyl heteroarylpyruvates were obtained by condensation of the corresponding methyl substituted azines or azoles with diethyl oxalate and in the presence of potassium tert-butoxide. The obtained compounds exist exclusively or predominantly in the enol form.
