probably due to a short range order of the weakly segregating
lipophilic and aromatic domains. Related phenomena, also
associated with the appearance of a diffuse small angle XRD
scattering, were observed at the transition from lamellar to 3D
hexagonal phases of facial T-shaped amphiphiles.35 In the LC
phases of these compounds, the lateral chains form domains that
are randomly distributed in the layers (diffuse scattering). With
decreasing temperature these domains adopt long-range order on
a hexagonal lattice, leading to correlated mesh phases,35 or fuse
to infinite columns penetrating the layers.35,7b Hence, for poly-
philic molecules composed of more than two incompatible units,
the stepwise onset of segregation and hence the stepwise onset of
long range order appears to be a general feature.

For the compounds investigated herein, the transition from
triangular/rhombic cylinders to a square honeycomb goes
through a disordered isotropic state upon reaching a critical
lateral chain length (compound 2/8). Periodic honeycomb struc-
tures combining triangular and square cells were not observed,
probably due to the large difference in space available in the
triangular and square cylinders. This would require an enthalp-
ically unfavourable change of the molecular conformation from
X-shaped to P-shaped in order to distribute the chains unequally
among the very distinct cylinders. On the other hand, the
enthalpic advantage of an alternative transition from randomized
rhombic cylinders via a periodic rhomb-tiling (c2mm) to square-
tiling by a continuous change of the inner angles seems to be not
sufficient to compensate for the reduction in entropy associated
with the transition from disordered to periodic rhomb tiling.
Addition of water to the isotropic phase of compound 2/8
swells the glycerol units, strengthens the hydrogen bonding
networks between the glycerol groups36 and gives rise to a tran-
sition from the disordered Iso phase to a hexagonal columnar
phase. This phase is composed of a proper triangular honey-
comb, as the packing frustration for the lateral alkyl chains is
reduced in the enlarged triangular cells.

Replacing one of the long lateral chains by a small methyl
group leads to honeycombs formed by double walls and cylinder
cells with a larger number of molecules in the circumference,
similar to T-shaped bolaamphiphiles with only one lateral chain.
Concerning the potential application of polygonal honey-
combs to produce well defined arrays of nano-structured organic
electronic materials by spontaneous self assembly, it is interesting
that UV investigations indicate p-stacking in the honeycombs of
the water saturated system. This encourages the further explo-
ration of this type of self-assembling material by modification of
the structure of the polar groups and the p-conjugated rods.
