Electrochemical synthesis of hydroquinone by anodic oxidation of benzene and cathodic reduction of the quinone transported in a branch stream of benzene has been tested in continuous operation for 4000 h in a pilot plant. The process utilizes the favorable solubilities of quinone in benzene and of hydroquinone in aqueous sulfuric acid as the electrolyte. The current efficiency was established as 40% for optimum volume/time yield with regard to the cell; under these conditions complete electrolyte purification is also accomplished. A branch flow of electrolyte taken from the cathode circulation via a cathodic post-reduction yields hydroquinone crystals by concentration; after a washing operation the product is of technical purity. Since all flows of the process can be completely recycled, entirely pollution-free hydroquinone production becomes feasible.
