Radical polymerization and nucleophilic addition of an amide group to the double bond of acrylamide take place parallel in conditions of shear deformation and high pressures (up to 8 GPa). Large shear deformations cause the formation of β-alanine as the result of reactions of hydrolysis of amide groups and peptide bonds.
