We could not perform reactions in D2O and consequently analyse the
reaction mixture by 1H NMR spectroscopy because of the kinetic
isotope effect (vide infra). The comparison between signals for
analogous CHx groups (x = 2,3) in the reactant/product was aimed to
minimize features that make a standard 13C experiment not suitable
for quantitative evaluation (NOE effect and short relaxation time).

solutions were previously standardized with Na2C2O4 and KMnO4
solutions, respectively. A weighted amount of sample was dissolved
in 6 M H2SO4. The vanadium(IV) content was determined with
KMnO4 titration, the total amount of vanadium was then determined
with a back titration with Mohr’s salt solution. Vanadium(V) content
was then obtained by difference.
