The thermal decomposition of Ru(η4-C8H12)(η6-C8H10) has been studied both isothermically and using temperature-programmed techniques (TPDE).Under a flow of H2, the TPDE gave spectra which showed two peaks, which indicates the formation of an intermediate species (which has not been characterized). The cyclooctadiene and cyclooctatriene ligands produce a complex mixture of saturated hydrocarbons, of which C8 hydrocarbons are the major products. The catalytic properties of the Ru cluster, obtained after the decomposition of Ru(η4-C8H12)(η6-C8H10) under a flow of H2, towards the hydrogenation of CO and olefins, have been studied.Reactions with CO + H2 led mainly to CH4.The hydrogenation of cyclooctadiene and cyclooctatriene was complete at room temperature, and the distribution of the products of the reactions is similar to those obtained during the TPDE of Ru(η4-C8H12)(η6-C8H10).The TPDE of Ru(η4-C8H12)(η6-C8H10), under a flow of H2, can be seen as an interesting model of the Ru metal reactivity towards the hydrogenation of these olefins.
