A process has been developed which allows the preparation of some solid ceramic fibers. In this process, activated carbon fibers which are porous throughout their entire diameter are impregnated with metal-containing solutions such as silicon tetrachloride. Calcination and sintering result in the formation of solid SiO2 fibers. Use of woven mats or non-woven felts of activated carbon fibers results in the formation of woven mats or nonwoven felts of silica fibers.
