Irradiation of acrylic and methacrylic acids at 193 or 249 nm results in decarboxylation. Energy disposal to the CO//2 product is monitored by photofragment infrared fluorescence and is consistent with a dissociation mechanism whereby CO**2 is formed in concert with a carbene. Our results provide some insight regarding the photophysical processes which obtain prior to chemical reaction.
